Maya Angelou, du Purple Onion de San Francisco à la Fenice de Venise

San Francisco, 1954. Alors que Maya Angelou, danseuse de profession - qui deviendra un jour écrivaine, militante, scénariste et documentariste -, se produit comme à son habitude au night-club "The Purple Onion", elle reçoit la visite d'un producteur de l'opéra "Porgy and Bess" en train de tourner en Californie. De but en blanc, il lui offre un petit rôle dans la troupe de plus d'une soixantaine d'afro-américains, qui partira prochainement en tournée en Europe. Mais le contrat que Maya a signé avec le club l'empêche d'accepter la proposition...
