Le 31 mars 1913 , Arnold Schoenberg dirige au Musikverein de Vienne un programme musical qui provoque une émeute au sein de la bonne société viennoise. Mettant à l'honneur quelques-unes des compositions du maître de l'Ecole de Vienne ainsi que celles de ses élèves Alban Berg et Anton Webern, la soirée est restée dans les annales comme le "Watschenkonzert" ou "concert des gifles".
